Elliptic Oak and Stainless Steel Seat

The Architects McMorran and Gatehouse commissioned this seat for Pershore Borough Council Offices in Worcestershire, and also for the new Public Library at Lewes, Sussex. It fits very well with the history of Lewes, its river and the notion of smuggling.

The design shares many similarities with the Elliptic II Series. Bearing in mind that we wanted the seat for public spaces, it was decided that European Oak would provide the solidity required. The clinker planking had to be substantial, for the same reasons, which requires steam-bending 25mm boards. The stainless steel uprights project through the solid oak seat into the ground. Stephen Mather and Stuart Graham at Holburn Smithy, in Northumberland, undertook the fabrication of the stainless steel components and assisted in building the seat.
