Elliptic Bridge

I had previously made a number of chairs for a client at Etal, here in north Northumberland, and he then progressed to tempt me with a bridge design for his large garden. Over a period of time I visited a number of bridges including two striking bridges, one at Luxmore Gardens at Eton College designed Jamie McCullough. The other, known as The Mathematical Bridge is at Queen’s College, Cambridge. I decided to keep within the bounds of my own creative abilities, which led me towards a design directly associated with the Elliptic Series of seats. Like The Mathematical Bridge, I wished to keep the use of steel to the minimum and as a result we are to have seven wracked and reamed beams, which will form the main supporting deck of the bridge. Oak, provided by Stuart H Somerscales Ltd, will be used throughout the project, which will be completed during 2007 with assistance from consulting architects McMorran & Gatehouse, and consulting engineers Price & Myers.
