This is one of those classic ‘labour of love’ projects with many emotional attachments. I inherited the dilapidated horse drawn van from the Jeffries at Kimmerston, and completely rebuilt it over a period of two and a half years. All that was salvaged included the 5 beams, the wheel-hubs, forged steel axels, springs, hoops and part of the front bogey. Jack Hardy, a retired wheelwright, made the wheels, windows and door. The layout of the new shepherds caravan was based on a small horse-drawn carriage that belonged to the Leyland family and is now seen at The Chainbridge Honey Farm at Horncliff on the river Tweed.
It is now fitted with Kingspan insulation, double-glazing, and a kitchen area with water, electricity, oil lamps and space for a gas cooker. There is also a large storage box affixed to the rear of the caravan.
