My interest in garden furniture started with designing rustic wall trellises, log seats and benches, but quickly I found a zeal for using steam to assist in bending interesting shapes in ash. Around this time I had visited a traveling exhibition for the Jerwood Furniture Prize where I came across the work of Guy Martin. He had designed a rustick chair where he used copper nails and steam bent ash. Experimentation and a sense of needing to develop my own original garden seats, I designed the Elliptic Series. I am always looking to achieve the perfect design and I feel that they now have a sense of place.
The pieces make connections as sculptural forms, are tactile and provide a sense of calm and wonder which gives them a spiritual identity. They capture the glancing eye with their interesting lines from front and behind. They are unconditional, authentic, stand-alone and appeal to the discerning collector.
They lend themselves to indoor or outdoor spaces, are all hand made and as such are individual and specific to the client and me.
